Metal Detecting Field Report - Minelab Excalibur II

The Minelab Excalibur II is the perfect water detecting machine. It works in any water condition - fresh or salt and in dry or wet sand with no adjustments required.

The Minelab Excalibur II comes in two coil sizes - an 8 inch or a 10 inch. Either one will work fine at the beach but the 10 inch is a little heavier but gives you a larger area.

To me the greatest feature of the Excalibur II is that it searches using 17 frequencies at the same time. Most metal detectors only use one frequency and in order to use additional frequencies, you have to change your coil.

The Excal II utilizes Broad Band Spectrum (BBS) Very Low Frequency (VLF) and this means you will be able to search using multiple frequencies at the same time. You will also be able to discriminate out rusty nails, hair pins and other pieces of junk and devote your time to digging only targets of value.

There are two hunting modes on the Excalibur II - All Metal or Pin Point and Discriminate. Hunting in Discriminate mode will allow you to determine what your target is before you dig it. This will save you countless hours of digging by knowing that your target is iron or a bottle cap and you can bypass the target. You will also know what a good coin signal is and what a good gold signal is.

There is no visual display on the Excalibur II - you will have to totally rely on tones. This takes a little bit of practice but it will be time well spent. The tones will eventually save you time.

If you are a scuba diver, the Excalibur II is ideal for you. There is a short rod that comes along with the metal detector and you are able to hunt in the water to a depth of 200 feet. The entire unit, including the headphones, is waterproof.

The Excal II works equally well when digging in the dirt. You can even metal detect if it is pouring rain since the detector is completely waterproof.

At $1,200, the Minelab Excalibur II is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. All it takes is for you to find one gold ring and the detector is paid for.

You will definitely enjoy metal detecting with the Excal II and once you learn the tones, you will be able to quickly identify targets and just dig the good ones.

Happy Hunting with your Minelab Excalibur II metal detector.
