Decorating Your Home With Recyclable Christmas Crafts

During Christmas, almost everyone is busy looking for ways on how to celebrate it. There are some who go out of the country for a vacation trip with their friends. Some just practically stay at home and have dinner with their family while others go to street parties and social gatherings to meet other people. No matter how you celebrate Christmas, there is one thing that is indispensable during this season - Christmas decorations. Homes, offices and other establishments put up Christmas crafts and decorations in order to add color to the Christmas atmosphere. However, with the changing world that people have right now, there is a more practical way of doing things. If you want to know more about it, read through this special article today.

Christmas and the Crisis

Today, the world is faced with so many economic problems so people have to tighten their belts. However, Christmas is already coming and this is the time of the year when there are so many expenses. So how are you going to celebrate the Yuletide season with the least expenses? What about the gifts, food and Christmas crafts?

There are several ways on how you can practically observe the Holidays without going out of your spending limit. Just the same, you would still be able to enjoy Christmas the same way that you did on the previous years. All you have to do is cut down your expenses to things that you really need like food. You can still give gifts to your family and friends. Anyway, it does not necessarily have to be expensive. You just have to give them something that they can add to their fondest Christmas memories. As for the decorations, you can use recyclable Christmas crafts for your home.

Here are some tips on how you can go about it.

You are able to recycle almost everything. Try to look for your old Christmas crafts at home. Choose which ones still look good and separate them from the other decors that are already destroyed. Try to restore the ones that are already ruined with the use of paint and other materials so that they will look good again. You can make use of these to decorate your home so that you would not have to by expensive Christmas crafts in the mall. There are other things that you can turn into attractive decorations like bottles, cans and other reusable materials. You just have to make use of your imagination and creativeness and you will be surprised on how much these recyclable materials can turn into just like the ornaments that you can buy at the mall.

Now that the holiday season is fast approaching, you can start collecting things that you can make use for your recyclable Christmas Crafts. As early as now, you can check which of your old decors can still be used so that you will know what to do with the Holiday ornaments that are already not so attractive and appealing.

Make Your Own Panoramic Sugar Easter Eggs

Making your own panoramic sugar Easter eggs is not hard, just a little time-consuming. But making them with friends or family will create memories that will last even longer than the beautiful eggs themselves.

First decide on the size you want your eggs to be. Purchase plastic Easter eggs that open lengthwise in the size you desire. They are a little harder to find than the typical plastic eggs.

Gather your ingredients:

Granulated sugar
Meringue powder (find this with the cake decorating supplies at craft or discount stores)
Confectioner's sugar
Cream of tartar (in the spice section of your grocer)
Coconut (optional - use for grass in your panoramic scene)
Food color (paste colors are recommended - find them with the cake decorating supplies)

Make sure you have these supplies on hand:

Waxed paper
Spoons, mixing and teaspoons
Icing decorating bags
Icing decorating tips
Spatulas
Mixer with wire whip

After determining how many eggs you would like to have at the end of your project, plan to make at least double that number. Sugar eggs are delicate and not all of them will make it to the end of your project.

Make the Shells

Mix granulated sugar with a tiny amount of water - just enough so that the sugar will hold together when squeezed into a ball.

Fill one of the halves of a plastic Easter egg with the damp sugar mixture. Turn it out onto waxed paper. If the sugar holds together, proceed. If not, try it again. If you can't get the sugar to hold after several attempts, add a tiny bit of water.

Once you successfully turn the sugar out onto the waxed paper, carefully cut off approximately 1 1/2 inches of the narrow end. You may need to cut more off if you are using very large eggs or less if you are using small eggs. This will form the opening that you will be able to look through.

Cut a semi-circle of waxed paper that is approximately 1/2" smaller in diameter than the opening. Place this against the sugar and prop something against it to keep the waxed paper in place. A stack of pennies should work well except with very large eggs.

You will need to wait several hours for the outside crust of the eggs to harden. If you attempt to pick them up too soon, your eggs will crumble (but you made extras, so this is not a problem). If you wait too long, your egg will be too solid and you will not be able to scoop out the soft sugar inside.

The amount of time it will take varies depending on how much water the sugar initially held, and the temperature, airflow, and humidity in the room. But think in terms of hours and not minutes.

Once you are able to hold the eggs without breaking them, scoop out the soft sugar with a teaspoon, leaving a crust approximately 3/8" to 1/2" thick, perhaps a little thicker for very large eggs.

Let the eggs dry for several more hours. They should be quite hard before you go on to the next step.

Make Your Scene

While waiting for the shells to dry is a great time to make the figures for your scene. You may have decided to make crosses, chicks, or bunnies out of icing. Or perhaps you've collected plastic figures that you want to dip in icing for a handmade look. You can decorate small cookies such as teddy bears. Remember that the cookies will not last as long as pure icing decorations.

To make all-icing decorations, use the following meringue royal icing recipe. This type of icing dries hard and lasts for a very long time. You will also use this type of icing later to assemble the eggs, so make sure that you reserve some for later or plan to make more.

Meringue Royal Icing

3 level tablespoons meringue powder
1 lb. confectioner's sugar, sifted
3-1/2 ounces warm water (1/2 cup minus 1 tablespoon)
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar

Mix all of the ingredients in the bowl of a mixer. Beat on medium high speed for 7 to 10 minutes. Any grease or oil in the bowl or on any utensils will keep this icing recipe from working, so be fastidious. Beat until the icing is firm enough to hold its shape. As soon as it is finished, cover the bowl with a damp towel. Keep it covered at all times as it dries and makes a crust easily.

Assemble Your Eggs

Choose one bottom half of an egg and assemble your scene in it. Use Royal icing in the bottom as "grass." Just use food coloring to make it green. You may also want to dye some coconut to add an even grassier touch.

Insert your crosses, bunnies, or other decorations. Be sure to orient them toward the opening.

Use white royal icing to "glue" a top in place. Allow the egg to dry before continuing.

Once the egg is dry, use icing with a decorator tip to pipe decorations over the seam and around the opening. You may also want to add a flower or other design to the top.

Allow the eggs to dry overnight before handling them again.

If your egg rolls to one side, use a file to flatten the bottom just a bit. Or pipe a ring of icing on the bottom to help stabilize the egg.

Wood Burning Crafts - Art and Hobby

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Perhaps you, like many other people, have recently become interested in woodcrafts. Woodworkers have many activities which they can pursue - furniture and toy making being two examples. Although enjoyable, most woodshops require a lot of room, plus a fairly large investment in tools. One woodcraft hobby which requires little space, and only a modest investment in tools is wood burning. Although it would be helpful to have a designated area to work and store tools, this space need not be large. Indeed a small sturdy table would be sufficient for most projects.

Wood burning as an art is easy to learn! Start up needs are minimal - a wood burning pen with interchangeable points, patterns, graphite paper, sandpaper, and wood sealer. Most of the other materials you need are common household items. Walnut Hollow Farm's wood burning pens are the best choice. Two basic pens are available - twenty one watt and twenty six watt. The twenty six watt is for all types of wood, especially the harder ones. The twenty one watt is the ideal beginner's pen. It's best used on softer woods.

Burning techniques differ depending on the point used. The key is to start with a simple pattern and learn how to use the many different points before progressing on to intermediate and advanced designs. A very good series of books for the beginning wood burner is from Walnut Hollow Farm. Creative Woodburning Book One contains all the easy to learn basics, plus many patterns to get you started. The rest of the series contains more patterns and techniques in many different styles.

The best wood to start on is basswood because it burns easily. Many types of basswood are available, including ovals, rounds, planks, and barrel staves. Neat wooden boxes in many different styles can also make good projects. The wood surface to be burned must be very smooth for best results. Sand the wood to as fine a finish as possible with a very fine grade of sandpaper.

The pattern is transferred to the wood surface using either graphite or white transfer paper. Use graphite paper on light wood and white transfer paper on dark wood. The pattern and transfer paper are taped to the wood with masking tape and a fine point ball-point pen is used to trace the design on to the wood.

As mentioned earlier, there are many different techniques of burning and several woodburning tips to use with the pen to get different effects. In addition, the burnings can be colored with oil colored pencils, and oil paint wash. The combination of wood grain, woodburning technique, and oil paints creates some stunningly beautiful art.

The list of wood burning craft projects which can be burned is limitless. Burn designs on jewelry boxes, ring boxes, cutlery boxes, clocks, and furniture. Burn woodcarvings to lend a unique touch to your woodcraft projects. Wall hangings and picture frames are also good candidates for wood burning. Take your wood art to any level you desire! It is a very enjoyable hobby.

Easy Easter Crafts For the Kids

Image : http://www.flickr.com

With Easter right around the corner, now is the time to start thinking about what types of crafts you might want to do with your kids to mark the occasion. Anyone can dye eggs on Easter, so why not try something new and exciting to get their little imaginations flowing. Browsing through a set of pottery lesson plans might have something that will tickle your fancy. If you can't find any help there, here a few ideas to help get you started.

A quick and simple way to get your children to smile is by making everyone their very own set of bunny ears. Simply cut a piece of white paper into a two inch thick strip. This strip will sit on top of your head, so measure as necessary and tape or staple to fit each person. To make the ears, cut out two large ears about eight inches long from the white paper. Next, grab some pink construction paper from your ware cart and cut out two slightly smaller ears and glue to the inside of the white ears. Once you have finished the ears all you have to do is glue them directly onto the head piece. What a quick and easy way to make something whimsical that everyone will enjoy.

Easter bunny cracker treats are a fun edible type craft. To get started, find your favorite round cracker and spread with a layer of cream cheese. Next, take a thinly sliced radish and cut out two white rabbit teeth and place on the cracker. To serve as whiskers, julienne a carrot and place them in the appropriate place on the bunny's face. For the puffy cheeks, choose your favorite white cheese and cut circles out of it. Place the cheese on the cracker between the teeth and the whiskers. To make the pink nose, cut a triangle out of the skin of the radish and place just above the cheeks. The only ingredient you need now is a couple of pretzels. Take two pretzel sticks side by side and press them into the cream cheese at the top of the cracker to form an ear. Do the same thing for the other ear. To make the eyes you can simply use the tip of a pretzel stick or any other food you would like to eat. Now that your children have helped to make this delicious snack, they are more likely to eat it! Hopefully you will find that stepping out from behind your wheel throwing projects is well worth it.

Crochet Storage Tips

Having the proper storage for your crochet supplies is very important. Not only will it protect your supplies from becoming damaged, but it will also make your crocheting projects easier. When it comes to finding the right storage solutions that work for you, take some time to examine all your options. Look at options that are easy to use and easy to find. Here are some storage ideas that work for me and that will work for you as well.

When people think of storage solutions, they often assume that the solutions are only for supplies you aren't currently using. However, storage solutions can also be used for your works in progress. For example, Tupperware containers can be used to hold yarn that you are currently working with, so that the yarn doesn't become tangled or dirty. Start by selecting a Tupperware container that has a lid that comes off. This will allow you to put the yarn in the container very easily. Then, put the lid back on the container and pull the strand of yarn through a tab opening on the lid. The yarn comes out very easily and you won't have to worry about it falling on the floor anymore.

Avoid putting yarn in storage containers, such as tote bags, that have Velcro tabs on them. When you pull out your yarn, it will most likely brush against the Velcro tab and become snagged and distorted. The yarn will then be ruined and you won't be able to use it. The only time that you can use storage containers with Velcro would be if the yarn were kept in a separate bag, plastic or fabric, so that there is no chance of the yarn touching the Velcro tabs.

Be creative and imaginative when looking for storage solutions. Storage solutions that are created specifically for crocheting or crafting tend to be more expensive than solutions that are created as general storage. For example, use photo boxes to store hooks, needles and scissors. Another example is to use a pencil holder that has been divided into several sections. Each section can then be used to hold crochet hooks of the same size.

Tote bags with multiple compartments are a terrific way to stay organized, since each compartment can hold different items. If you don't have a tote bag, one alternative is to use cosmetic bags of various sizes. Select one very large cosmetic bag to hold several smaller bags. The smaller bags will act like the compartments of the tote bag, with each one holding a different item, such as hooks or sewing supplies.

Whether you are using a tote bag or several cosmetic bags, both storage solutions have several advantages. The main advantage is that all of your supplies are kept together in one place, making them quick and easy to find. Another advantage is that your supplies are now portable for when you want to travel somewhere. Instead of taking a lot of time to gather everything together, all you have to do is grab the bags and go. A third advantage is that if you use a tote bag for your current project, then supplies won't get lost or misplaced.

Metal Detecting Field Report - Minelab Excalibur II

The Minelab Excalibur II is the perfect water detecting machine. It works in any water condition - fresh or salt and in dry or wet sand with no adjustments required.

The Minelab Excalibur II comes in two coil sizes - an 8 inch or a 10 inch. Either one will work fine at the beach but the 10 inch is a little heavier but gives you a larger area.

To me the greatest feature of the Excalibur II is that it searches using 17 frequencies at the same time. Most metal detectors only use one frequency and in order to use additional frequencies, you have to change your coil.

The Excal II utilizes Broad Band Spectrum (BBS) Very Low Frequency (VLF) and this means you will be able to search using multiple frequencies at the same time. You will also be able to discriminate out rusty nails, hair pins and other pieces of junk and devote your time to digging only targets of value.

There are two hunting modes on the Excalibur II - All Metal or Pin Point and Discriminate. Hunting in Discriminate mode will allow you to determine what your target is before you dig it. This will save you countless hours of digging by knowing that your target is iron or a bottle cap and you can bypass the target. You will also know what a good coin signal is and what a good gold signal is.

There is no visual display on the Excalibur II - you will have to totally rely on tones. This takes a little bit of practice but it will be time well spent. The tones will eventually save you time.

If you are a scuba diver, the Excalibur II is ideal for you. There is a short rod that comes along with the metal detector and you are able to hunt in the water to a depth of 200 feet. The entire unit, including the headphones, is waterproof.

The Excal II works equally well when digging in the dirt. You can even metal detect if it is pouring rain since the detector is completely waterproof.

At $1,200, the Minelab Excalibur II is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. All it takes is for you to find one gold ring and the detector is paid for.

You will definitely enjoy metal detecting with the Excal II and once you learn the tones, you will be able to quickly identify targets and just dig the good ones.

Happy Hunting with your Minelab Excalibur II metal detector.

O Scale Model Trains - Common Mistakes

Many a newbie model railroader will decide that, instead of HO, they prefer to build their railroad empire using O scale model trains. While the bigger trains may seem easier to work with and just plain more fun they can also be a source of frustration to the inexperienced. Here are some common mistakes made with O scale trains.

Is your turning radius too tight? While the minimum turning radius for an O scale train is 24 inches you have to realize that box cars and passenger cars are not the same length. If you're recreating an 19th century freight route you might be OK but if you decide that instead you'd like to run a modern Amtrak passenger train you may be plagued with derailments with such a small turning radius. Besides the functionality of too small a turn radius you also have the glaring fact that it just doesn't look that realistic.

Are your inclines too steep? Most new model railroaders envision some sort of tunnel or bridge in their layout where the trains will run underneath its own track or up over the roads the cars travel. When you're working in smaller scale where you have room to build long inclines this is not usually an issue. Not so with O scale. Given the height required to clear another train track your O scale layout will require a very long incline indeed especially if you've created a long train to begin with. You're not going to go from ground level to train clearing bridge height in only two feet. If you do not have large layout, one solution is to send your lower track slightly underground so that your upper track does not need to rise as much.

Is your landscape out of scale? Even though a locomotive is higher than a one story house we must remember that in the real world trees still tower over trains. No where is this single mistake made more than with O scale train layouts. The same scaling mistake is common with outbuildings and people. When buying any accessories or buildings for your layout make sure that you know it is to scale and not that it just looks to be the correct scale.

Does your train match your track? Unlike Ho scale where everything pretty much works with everything else, O scale modeling can truly be confusing when it comes to matching the correct track to your train. Since the early days when these toy trains were run on shiny three rail tracks there have been some major innovations that include two rail systems, more authentic O gauges and the option of running O scale trains on narrow tracks. Do your research before buying even your first train set, because once you've selected a track, you're stuck with it or will be doing a major overall down the road.

Keep these common mistakes in mind when planning your layout and it should make building your O scale train layout much more enjoyable.

UFO Year 2009 in Review (9/16) on Coast to Coast AM

UFO Year 2009 in Review on Coast to Coast AM Date: 12-27-09 Host: George Knapp Guests: Alejandro Rojas, Antonio Huneeus, Mark Easter, Chuck Reever George Knapp reviewed some of the top UFO stories of 2009 with Alejandro Rojas & Antonio Huneeus of Open Minds TV in the first two hours, and Mark Easter and Chuck Reever, affiliated with MUFON, in the second half of the show. Rojas talked about some remarkable recent sightings in Argentina, in which a cigar-shaped object was seen by multiple witnesses hovering over several small towns, near turbines and power stations, and was associated with blackouts. At one location, five power poles were burned down on the top in the same pattern, something that would not be seen in the case of a lightning strike, Huneeus detailed. Further material on the Argentina incidents can be found in Huneeus' report. Another noteworthy case was the sighting of a black triangle in September 2009 in North Carolina, which MUFON investigated. A witness shined a light at the craft, and it tilted a beam back at him. Though he dodged the beam, it left burn marks on him. Later the witness had visits from Men in Black (MIBs), Rojas said. More on this case here. In general, 2009 was a bit of a down year for major UFO events, though media coverage remained strong, Rojas commented. Easter spoke about several cases of solid orange globes seen near mines in Nevada. Witnesses described the globes appearing, vanishing, and then reappearing in different spots (see ...

UFO Year 2009 in Review (1/16) on Coast to Coast AM

Easter Bunny Family Crafts

Do you remember doing those fun Easter Bunny family crafts when you were a kid? Well now you are able to do Easter bunny family crafts with your kids and give the fun experience that you had. As you are doing your crafts you will be able to sing those famous Easter songs such as Peter Cottontail. Within this article we are going to give you some nice Easter bunny family crafts ideas.

First we are going to tell you how to make the Easter bunny himself. Seriously, what would an Easter be like without having the Easter bunny? We guarantee your kids are going to have a lot of fun making this Easter bunny. You will not need many materials. All you are going to need is some cardboard and chocolate pudding (the instant kind). You can take the clean piece of cardboard and make it into a bunny shape. Then you take a mall bowl of pudding and let the children "finger paint" the instant pudding onto the bunny in order to create their very own chocolate bunny picture. Yes, this can be sloppy so you may want to put some newspapers down.

With this next Easter bunny family crafts project you will need a bit more materials than you did in the last craft. With this craft you will need pink construction paper, white poster board, a pencil, scissors, tape or a stapler, glue, coloring accessories and Easter stickers (optional). Take the poster board and cut a strip that is about 2" wide and 24" long. Next you will want to take the poster board and cut out ears that are about 8 ½" long by 3 1/2" Next you will want to cut out 2 ears that are smaller out of the pink paper. Take the pink ears and glue them inside the white ears. You can let your child take the stickers and decorate the headband and color it. In the end you will need to tape or staple the headband but make sure it will fit the child's head.

With these two Easter bunny family crafts we listed you can count on your children laughing and smiling as they do them. If you are worried about the other Easter bunny family crafts that you found being too hard then you should probably stick with two, especially the first one. The first one "chocolate bunny" is made for really small children. Remember when you are doing your Easter bunny family crafts you should keep a close watch on your children, especially if the Easter bunny family crafts involve scissors. You should make sure you purchase the safe scissors. Also if the child is young then you should do the stapling for him or her.
